Three dead in Adentan floods after torrential rain – MCE confirms

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Adentan, Ella Esiman Nongo, confirmed three fatalities. This followed heavy rains that caused flooding in Accra on May 18, 2025.

Madam Nongo spoke on the Citi Breakfast Show on May 19. She reported that the deaths occurred in Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon. Two victims were from Lakeside, including a four-year-old girl from Nanakrom.

A gentleman also lost his life near New Legon. The flooding resulted from nearly three hours of rain starting at 3:00 p.m. Many communities were left underwater.

Affected areas included Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, and Tema. Roads became impassable and vehicles were stranded. The Odaw drain overflowed due to the large volume of water.

Madam Nongo mentioned that emergency teams rescued many residents in Ashiyie. However, she highlighted the severe damage and ongoing risks in low-lying areas.

She noted that construction on waterways prevents proper drainage during rains. This is a major challenge for the municipality.

The MCE called for stricter enforcement of building codes. She urged urgent action to address the causes of flooding in Adentan and Greater Accra Region as a whole.
