Tinkong Residents Urge Completion of Abandoned Police Station Amid Rising Crime
Residents of Tinkong, in the Akuapem North Municipality, are asking for help. They want their abandoned police station completed due to rising crime. The town has faced many thefts targeting businesses, churches, and homes.
Living in Tinkong has become frightening for many. Business owners experience nightly thefts that disrupt their lives. Shops are often broken into, and car parts like batteries and tires are stolen. The constant threat from robbers creates an atmosphere of fear.
One local business owner, Martin Adu, shared his experience. His mobile phone shop was robbed three times. Criminals cut through his metal container to steal inventory. “Losing all your inventory is not easy,” he said.
Another shop owner, Fred Agyei, also faced theft. He found his drinks bar broken into one morning. “I sleep with my eyes open since that horrible experience,” he explained.
The problem extends beyond businesses to churches as well. Both the Presbyterian and Methodist churches have had equipment stolen multiple times. Despite numerous reports to the police, no suspects have been caught.
Residents have requested a police post in their community but received no support yet. All crime reports go to distant police stations in Koforidua or Adawso. Surrounding farming villages also face similar issues with crime.
Samuel Kwadwo Abokyi, the assemblyman for Tinkong, addressed these concerns. He stated that the situation requires support from various stakeholders. To tackle this issue, community leaders began constructing a police post funded by local contributions.
Abokyi mentioned that attempts to secure official support have failed so far. He emphasized the importance of security for protecting property and attracting investors.
Despite spending tens of thousands of cedis on the project, it remains incomplete. Electrical work and internal furnishings still need attention. Abokyi hopes for completion but did not provide a timeline.
Martin Adu stressed that assured security would attract more investments and job opportunities for residents. Ebenezer Asumah added that a police post would help reduce crime significantly.
In another news story, Kaakyire Antwiwaa appealed to Ghana's Inspector General of Police regarding officer safety in conflict-prone areas like Bawku and Binduri.
