Tinkong residents urge authorities to fix their basic school classroom block

Tinkong Residents Request Renovation of School Classrooms

Pupils at Tinkong SDA Basic School need a better learning environment. The classrooms leak badly when it rains, disrupting lessons. School authorities are asking the government and individuals for help to re-roof the building.

The Tinkong SDA Basic School was established in 1997. It operates in an abandoned COCOBOD apartment. The living room serves as the Basic One classroom, while two other rooms are for Kindergarten One and Two.

The school structure is over forty years old and has never been renovated. The roof is rusted and leaks, with many windows missing. The fascia boards are rotten and some have fallen off.

Inside the classrooms, rainwater runs down the walls from the ceiling. This creates puddles on the floor during rainfall. Dark green stains mark the walls, while chairs and tables get soaked or damaged. Books often get ruined, and posters on walls tear easily.

A teacher noted that after each rainfall, humidity increases in classrooms. This is unhealthy for children. When it rains during class, pupils must move to a dry area until it stops.

After rain, teachers spend time cleaning up before classes resume. “It wastes a lot of our time,” one teacher said. “We returned one morning to find all our books soaked.” They had to contribute money to replace them.

Headteacher Hannah Boateng is worried about students' health and comfort. She says the Parent Association tried to help but lacks resources for major repairs. Efforts to get assistance from local authorities have failed.

“The Municipal Chief Executive visited but did not follow up,” Miss Boateng stated. Assemblyman Samuel Kwadwo Abokyi also acknowledges the problem but has not received support either.

Residents of Tinkong want better conditions for their children’s education. Until help arrives, pupils will continue facing these challenges in their quest for learning.

In related news, Tinkong residents are also calling for completion of their police station due to rising insecurity in the area from thefts targeting businesses and homes.
