Joycelyn Quashie, the MP for North Dayi Constituency, urged the government to act. She wants policies that protect citizens from tobacco industry manipulation.
Quashie emphasized that Ghana should stand firm against such tactics. She spoke during a parliamentary session on World No Tobacco Day, May 31, 2025. The theme this year is "Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products."
The campaign aims to reveal how tobacco companies target young people. By exposing these strategies, the WHO seeks to raise awareness and advocate for stronger policies. This includes banning flavors that make tobacco products more appealing.
Quashie cautioned Ghanaians, especially youth, about attractive packaging and flavors. Behind these lies a multi-billion-dollar industry focused on recruiting new consumers—our children and youth.
"This is not just a public health issue," she stated. "It involves national development, social justice, and intergenerational equity."
She noted that as traditional markets decline, the tobacco industry targets young people more aggressively. They use digital platforms and influencers to promote smoking and vaping as trendy.
Her final message was clear: "Let Ghana be counted among nations that protect their people."
