Tony Aubynn: Sustained action needed to curb galamsey, not state of emergency

Dr. Anthony Aubynn, CEO of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, opposes a State of Emergency for illegal mining, known as 'galamsey'.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, he shared his views. He believes the government should use existing resources to tackle illegal mining.

Dr. Aubynn acknowledged the Mahama administration's 2024 pledge for a state of emergency. However, he feels this may not be necessary.

He emphasized that illegal mining is a long-standing issue. It requires sustained effort and strategic action, not emergency measures.

He stated, “I don’t know if we need a state of emergency.” He believes there are ways to stop illegal mining effectively.

Dr. Aubynn noted that the government has the tools to address this issue. He mentioned Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah's emotional response to the situation.

“We have resources to reduce it in a way people can live with,” he added.
