Dr. John Osae-Kwapong is a research fellow at CDD-Ghana. He has commented on the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He believes the situation aligns with constitutional provisions.
This statement comes after the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) called for her suspension to be revoked. The GBA described the action as unconstitutional and lacking legal basis under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
On Channel One TV's The Big Issue, Dr. Osae-Kwapong said, “The processes we are going through reflect how the constitution is designed.”
The suspension has led to widespread reactions. Some legal experts question its legality and implications for judicial independence.
Private legal practitioner Justice Abdulai disagreed with the GBA's resolution condemning the suspension. He called it meritless and irrelevant to Ghana’s constitutional processes.
He stated, “I was not part of the 47 that voted for the resolution.” He added, “I completely disagree with the resolution and every single letter in it.”
