Accra’s central business district has changed significantly after a recent decongestion exercise. Previously crowded streets now have order, space, and smooth traffic.
City authorities are receiving praise for improving the capital’s busiest areas. However, many displaced traders feel uncertain about their future.
JoyNews’ Valentina Semenyo spoke with affected vendors. Many are asking the government for designated spaces to continue their trade legally.
The central business district now has a more organized environment. Yet, petty traders removed during the exercise are concerned about their livelihoods.
They urge city authorities to create well-planned market spaces. This would allow them to operate safely without fear of eviction.
Some traders appreciate the order brought by the decongestion. Trader Salomey Adjetey said, “The cleared spaces help customers navigate and display goods.”
Despite these improvements, calls for a long-term solution are increasing. Traders insist that without designated market areas, they may return to pavements. This could lead to more confrontations with city authorities.
