The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, announced a GH₵2,000 fine. This fine targets traders on pavements and streets in the Central Business District (CBD).
The announcement follows a decongestion exercise on May 20. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly conducted this exercise. It aimed to clear street traders from unauthorized locations.
This effort is part of a broader initiative. The goal is to reduce congestion, enforce city bylaws, and improve sanitation in Accra.
During her tour of the CBD, Minister Ocloo issued a warning. She emphasized that the government is determined to restore order. “We will activate our task force to work 24 hours,” she said.
Ocloo explained that they will draw a red line on the road. Crossing this line will incur a fee of GH₵1,500 to GH₵2,000. Leaders in all markets will monitor compliance alongside the task force.
In related news, AMA's Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Michael Kpakpo Allotey, shared future plans. He mentioned blocking specific streets in the CBD on designated days.
This measure aims to regulate street trading under the government's 24-hour economy initiative. “On certain days, market women can sell on the street,” he explained.
Drivers will be diverted to different roads during these times. The MCE believes this initiative will support lawful economic activity without disrupting city order.
