The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has issued a warning. Traders operating illegally in the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra face fines. If caught, they could pay up to GH₵2,000.
Her statement follows a decongestion exercise on May 20. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly led this effort. They targeted hawkers and street vendors occupying walkways and unauthorized spaces.
“We will activate our task force to work 24 hours,” Madam Ocloo said. They will draw a red line on the road. Crossing this line will result in a fee of GH₵1,500 to GH₵2,000.
Enforcement will be strict and ongoing. The task force will operate alongside appointed market leaders. These leaders will monitor compliance in all markets.
This action is part of a broader effort by city authorities. They aim to enforce sanitation regulations and ease traffic congestion. Their goal is to restore order in the capital's heart.
