Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has directed the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to begin registering and licensing motorbikes for commercial use.
This move aligns with the government's commitment to legalizing "Okada" operations, a key National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto pledge.
Mr. Nikpe, also the MP for Saboba, emphasized that proper licensing would enhance road safety and reduce accidents. His directive follows a visit to the DVLA on his first day in office.
Currently, Ghana’s Road Traffic Regulations (L.I 2180) prohibit motorbikes for commercial transport. However, the new directive signals an imminent revision of this law.
The minister assured Okada riders of proper training and regulation, with full implementation expected by the end of the first quarter.
