Abass Imoro is the Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). He announced that transport fares may soon be reduced. This comes as the Ghana cedi strengthens against the US dollar.
Imoro spoke to Channel One News on Monday, May 19. He mentioned that negotiations with the Ministry of Transport are close to finishing. A final meeting is set for Tuesday, May 20.
“It was a marathon meeting,” he said. The Transport Ministry and transport operators are discussing fare percentages. They reached a halfway agreement and will meet again for a final decision.
The discussions focus on reducing fares in line with the cedi's appreciation. Imoro assured commuters that they would see some relief soon. “The public should rest assured that we will give them a smiley reduction,” he added.
