Transport fares in Ghana will decrease by 15% starting Saturday, May 24, 2025. This follows successful talks between transport operators and the Ministry of Transport.
The fare adjustment reflects recent improvements in the economy. The Ghanaian cedi has appreciated against the US dollar. This change has led to a significant drop in fuel prices.
Additionally, the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association urged members to lower automotive parts prices. They want to respond to the more favorable exchange rate.
Abass Imoro, Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), confirmed the fare reduction in an interview with Citi FM. He called it a timely move to ease financial pressures on commuters.
“We have agreed to reduce lorry fares by 15%, effective Saturday,” Mr. Imoro said.
He noted that spare parts sellers promised price reductions, but they haven't taken effect yet. Prices for lubricants have not decreased either. Despite this, they decided on a 15% fare reduction.
This cut is expected to provide relief for passengers across the country. There are ongoing calls for further price adjustments based on economic changes.
