Transport operators in Tamale have not fully complied with the GPRTU directive. The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) ordered a 15% fare reduction. This change was set to take effect on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
Reports indicate that some stations only reduced fares by 10%. Others are delaying the reduction until Monday, citing late notice.
The fare adjustment follows successful negotiations between transport operators and the Ministry of Transport. The 15% decrease is due to the cedi's appreciation against the US dollar, which lowered fuel prices.
Abass Imoro, GPRTU's Industrial Relations Officer, confirmed the fare reduction will start on Saturday. He noted that spare parts sellers promised price cuts, but these have not yet happened.
Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro advised passengers against assaulting drivers or their mates. Instead, he urged them to report non-compliant drivers to the police. He stated, “Don’t beat drivers or mates if they refuse to reduce fares; report them instead.”
