Transport operators threaten nationwide strike over indiscriminate trading on roads

Commercial transport operators have issued a warning to the government. They plan a nationwide strike on May 19, 2025. This action will occur if street trading issues are not addressed.

At a press briefing, Mr. Samuel Amaoh spoke for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). He expressed concern about traders encroaching on roads and pavements. This situation threatens public safety and disrupts traffic flow in major cities.

Despite the Road Traffic Regulation 2012 (LI 2180), trading continues unchecked. This endangers lives and worsens congestion in busy urban areas, Mr. Amaoh stated.

The GPRTU is calling for urgent measures. They want designated parking spaces and improved traffic management systems.

For the May 19 protest, the union invites several ministers to join them. These include those from Transport, Roads and Highways, Local Government, Trade and Industry, and Interior. They hope to discuss long-term solutions during this demonstration.

Asonaba Nana Weridu, Deputy Secretary of the Concern Drivers Association, also spoke out. He emphasized that the protest aims for safety and order, not economic disruption.

“We want sanity on the roads,” he said. “It’s about ensuring everyone can do business safely.”
