Various transport unions in Ghana have withdrawn from a planned sit-down strike by Organized Labour to protest illegal mining (galamsey).
The strike, set for October 10, aimed to push the government to act against galamsey's environmental damage.
Unions like PROTOA, Co-operative, and the Ghana Committed Drivers Association expressed support but noted that halting services would harm commuters.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) also advised against participating, labeling their services as essential.
Following government action, including deploying more military and suspending mining in forest reserves, the strike was suspended.
