Prof. Kwesi Aning leads the Office for International Cooperation at KAIPTC. He recently discussed Burkina Faso’s President, Ibrahim Traoré, on Channel One TV. Aning believes Traoré is disliked by the West. This is because he uses his country's resources for its citizens.
Aning argues that Traoré and other Sahelian leaders are changing governance in West Africa. He compares Traoré’s ideology to Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Aning notes that current Sahel leadership revives aspirations for African self-determination.
He states, “The only problem of Ibrahim Traoré and the Nigerien leader is that they are using their resources for their people.” Aning explains that Traoré embodies a blend of historical pan-Africanist ideals. He connects Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger in raising new questions about development and security.
Aning also criticized Western countries for failing to address violent extremism in the region. He pointed out that these countries have been involved for decades without success. “Overnight, when these guys took over, the terrorists have become much more powerful,” he said.
He questioned where the terrorists' improved equipment and intelligence access come from. Prof. Aning believes Burkina Faso's ties with Russia should not be a concern.
