Tributes pour in from world leaders after Pope Francis’ death

Tributes have poured in worldwide after the death of Pope Francis. The 88-year-old leader of the Roman Catholic Church passed away on April 21, 2025. He died just a day after celebrating Easter Mass at St. Peter’s Square in Rome.

The Vatican confirmed his passing after a long illness. Although he had recently returned from the hospital, his death was sudden. This news shocked millions of Catholics and world leaders alike.

Many global leaders expressed their condolences on social media platforms like Facebook and X. They honored Pope Francis as a spiritual reformer known for humility, compassion, and peace.

King Charles shared his sadness: “My wife and I were deeply saddened by the death of Pope Francis.” He noted that it eased their hearts to know he shared an Easter greeting with the world he served.

Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, General Secretary of the Commonwealth, posted her sorrow on Facebook. She said, “His advocacy for the poor, peace, and tolerance touched lives across the Commonwealth.”

French President Emmanuel Macron called him “a man of humility.” He recognized Francis’s simplicity and devotion to marginalized people.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof remembered him as “a man of the people.” This reflected the Pope’s commitment to connecting with ordinary individuals.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola remarked on his warmth. She said, “His contagious smile captured millions of hearts globally.”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog praised Pope Francis's compassion. He stated that Francis built bridges between faiths and left a legacy of peace.

Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter described him as “a great spiritual leader.” She noted his tireless advocacy for peace.

Scottish First Minister John Swinney highlighted the Pope’s moral voice in international affairs. He called him a voice for peace and reconciliation in a troubled world.

Filipino Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, wrote: "May you rest in peace." He acknowledged Francis's relentless support for the poor and persecuted.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union, paid tribute to Pope Francis too. He praised his engagement with Africa and support for those affected by conflict.

The Church of England also offered prayers for Pope Francis. Meanwhile, plans are underway in Rome to find his successor.
