GPRTU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Fuel Levy Increase
Commercial transport operators plan a nationwide strike on June 10, 2025. This is due to a GH¢1 increase in the fuel levy.
On June 5, Abass Ibrahim Imoro spoke to the press. He is the Industrial Public Relations Officer of GPRTU. He criticized the levy as a unilateral decision made without proper consultation.
Imoro warned that this increase would cause hardship for the transport sector. The GH¢1 rise per litre means a direct 6.7% increase in operational costs. He noted that drivers might need to raise fares by up to 15%.
The GPRTU and other transport associations demand an immediate reversal of this policy. They want comprehensive discussions with the government and relevant stakeholders.
Imoro urged the government to consider how this levy affects the transport sector. He highlighted potential catastrophic consequences for the economy if they do not engage in meaningful discussions about energy sector challenges.
