Hamadatu Ibrahim Hussein, former Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has a message for African nations. She believes they should view recent U.S. trade tariffs as an opportunity. This chance can help expand local production and reduce reliance on imports.
In an interview with Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Original TV, Hussein shared her thoughts. She stated that Africa should see former President Donald Trump’s tariffs as a way to gain economic self-determination. “This is not the time for complaints about global trade injustices,” she said. “It is time to act — to produce, innovate, and empower our local industries.”
Hussein pointed out that Trump's trade policies create a unique opening for African governments. They can rethink their economic strategies and invest in domestic production capacity. “No one will develop Africa for us,” she emphasized. The tariffs may impact global trade, but they also invite Africa to stop relying on imports.
She urged African leaders to focus on policies that support local development. This includes increasing access to affordable capital for small businesses and improving infrastructure. These steps can help lower the cost of doing business.
Hussein also called for a stronger commitment to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). She described it as a potential game-changer if implemented seriously and strategically. “Let this be the moment we stop exporting raw materials and importing finished products,” she added.
Her remarks come amid growing concerns about how global economic policies affect Africa's economy.
