Trump’s tariffs won’t change US-Ghana relations—Palmer

The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has reaffirmed the strong relationship between Ghana and the US. This comes despite recent changes in American trade policy under President Donald Trump.

In her first media engagement, Palmer highlighted Ghana as an important ally. She stated, “No matter the change in language or focus, Ghana is a really important partner of the United States.”

Her comments respond to President Trump’s latest executive order. This order imposes significant tariffs on exports to the US.

Under this new directive, Ghanaian goods will face a 10% levy. This move raises concerns about its impact on trade and economic ties.

The tariffs will take effect on April 5. They fall under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977. The aim is to address trade imbalances.

Countries with large trade surpluses with the US will face customized tariffs. These tariffs are calculated at half the rate those nations impose on American exports.

Despite these policy changes, Ambassador Palmer's remarks show Washington's commitment to strong relations with Ghana. However, it remains unclear how these new tariffs will affect future trade dynamics.
