Rescue efforts are ongoing in the Ashanti Region. This follows the collapse of an illegal gold mine. At least two lives have been lost.
The incident happened on Tuesday morning in Mpasatia. Miners were trapped when the pit caved in.
“So far, we have found two bodies,” an official said. “They are both male adults. One is from Mpasatia, and the other is unidentified.” There are concerns that more miners may be trapped underground.
Emergency responders, including police, initially arrived at the scene. However, they later withdrew from the area. Local residents continued the rescue mission on their own.
“The police came but returned to base,” said Salifu Karim. He is the Assemblyman for Mpasatia Ahembronum. “We are now arranging to contact NADMO for help.” For now, local residents are handling the situation themselves.
