The High Court in Accra has acquitted Warrant Officer Class 1 Samuel Yao Fiagbedzi and Richard Adri, also known as Mumuni. They were cleared of all charges related to the Western Togoland Restoration Front (WTRF) and the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF).
Judge Marie-Louise Simmons stated that the prosecution did not provide enough evidence. She noted that Fiagbedzi's presence in a WhatsApp group was not sufficient proof of involvement. Similarly, Adri’s receipt of a T-shirt from the group's founder did not show support.
In contrast, four others—Ernest Dzitor, Prosper Avumenyi, Benjamin Kplevi, and Isaac Kwasi Afeku—must now open their defense. The court found initial evidence suggesting their links to the separatist groups. This evidence included admissions, items found with them, and their participation in activities.
The prosecution claimed that the accused were involved in efforts to create a breakaway state from Ghana’s Volta, Oti, and parts of Eastern and Northern regions. The groups reportedly recruited and trained youth through social media and meetings.
The case is ongoing.
