U.S. deports only lawbreakers – Ambassador Palmer

Outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has clarified recent deportations. She stated that these involve only individuals who broke immigration laws or committed crimes.

Her comments come as public attention grows over the deportation of Ghanaians. Some individuals are reportedly awaiting removal from the U.S.

During an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle, she emphasized that deportations are not widespread. They are based strictly on legal grounds.

Ambassador Palmer mentioned her conversation with Foreign Affairs Minister Okudzeto Ablakwa. They agreed to inform the Ministry of Interior about anyone with a criminal record being deported.

She noted that the number of deportees is low and each case involves a breach of U.S. law. “About a dozen Ghanaians have been deported; it’s a very low number,” she said.

“They are being deported for breaking the law in the United States or overstaying,” she added.

The Ambassador's clarification comes as both governments work together on immigration matters. They aim to ensure that deportation procedures follow due process.

“I’m committed to backing Ghana’s future MCC eligibility,” said Ambassador Palmer.
