U.S. donates $6m armoured vehicles to boost Ghana’s defence capabilities

The United States government has donated 14 mine-resistant, ambush-protected APCs to Ghana. These vehicles are worth over $6 million. This donation aims to enhance Ghana's counter-terrorism and border security operations.

The handover ceremony occurred at Burma Camp in Accra. Both nations view this as a strengthening of their defense cooperation and security ties.

The Puma M36 vehicles provide better troop protection and mobility. They will improve Ghana’s readiness against emerging security threats. This also helps safeguard the country's territorial integrity.

Over the past four weeks, more than 40 Ghanaian soldiers received specialized training. They learned how to operate and maintain these vehicles.

U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Madam Virginia Palmer, spoke at the event. She called the donation a symbol of enduring partnership between the two countries. It reflects shared values and a commitment to peace and stability.

“These APCs support GAF’s mission for peace and border integrity,” she stated. “They make both Ghana and the U.S. safer.” She added that this is part of broader commitments, including ongoing training and joint operations.

Ambassador Palmer praised Ghana’s leadership in regional security efforts. She highlighted its contributions to multinational peacekeeping missions like Flintlock and African Lion.

Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah expressed gratitude for the donation. He called it “generous and strategic.”

“This occasion symbolizes our enduring partnership,” he said. It shows our shared commitment to peace, stability, and security in West Africa.

Dr Boamah commended GAF's professionalism. He encouraged personnel to uphold their duty in executing their mission.

Senior military officers, U.S. Africa Command representatives, and diplomats attended the ceremony. The event coincided with Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), highlighting global security cooperation's importance.

This donation adds to recent U.S military support for Ghana. Previous support includes patrol boats, mobile field hospitals, and critical infrastructure improvements.
