The Media Coalition Against Galamsey has urged the government to act. They want effective regulations to prevent over-exploitation of mineral deposits in the Upper East Region.
On March 29, Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga announced new mineral discoveries. These include gold deposits in seven out of fifteen district assemblies and municipalities.
Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, Convenor of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, shared his concerns with Citi News. He worries about potential environmental damage from irresponsible mining practices in the region.
He stated, “Mining can be beneficial if done properly.” However, he is concerned about the Minister's haste to start mining without considering its impact on land and water.
Dr. Ashigbey urged the Minister to learn from other regions with mining experience. He emphasized the need for proper governance and regulations before proceeding. The region is close to the Sahara, so protecting tree cover and water bodies is crucial.
