Donatus Atanga Akamugri, the Upper East Regional Minister, has issued a warning. Residents responsible for poor sanitation will be held accountable and fined.
This action aims to address growing sanitation issues in the region. The focus is on municipal and district capitals.
Mr. Akamugri made this announcement during a visit to Tindaana Baba Ayeta Yagele Kuure. He thanked the Tindaana for his support and sought further collaboration for regional development.
The Minister expressed concern about the poor sanitation situation, especially in Bolgatanga. He reiterated the government's commitment to improving cleanliness in the area.
He noted an increase in waste dumping, clogged drains, and unkempt surroundings. Residents must take responsibility for their environment and maintain cleanliness.
The government plans to reintroduce National Sanitation Day. They will also monitor communities to ensure residents keep their areas clean.
“In this region, we will work with Municipal and District Chief Executives,” he said. “Environmental units will inspect assigned communities.”
“People can be fined if they do not fulfill their responsibilities,” he added.
Despite Zoomlion's efforts, many areas remain dirty. Mr. Akamugri attributed this to residents' attitudes and weak enforcement of sanitation laws.
He believes inspections will deter poor practices and promote shared responsibility among residents.
The Minister warned that unauthorized structures would be demolished in towns. He urged traditional leaders to educate their communities about compliance.
“We are not targeting anyone personally; the law applies equally,” he stated.
He mentioned that stakeholders would be engaged before any demolition occurs regarding unauthorized structures.
Tindaana Baba Ayeta Yagele Kuure expressed confidence in the Minister’s ability to improve the region. He described it as “underdeveloped” compared to others like Upper West Region.
He noted that Bolgatanga has been neglected by past governments but assured support for Mr. Akamugri’s efforts.
“Do not fear; work towards leaving a lasting legacy,” he encouraged him.
“I am with you, and so are our gods as long as you act justly.”
