The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has expelled 38 first-year students for failing to meet the institution’s academic standards.
A statement issued on March 7, 2025, explained that the affected students did not attain the minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 1.0 or failed more than the allowed number of courses after resits.
The decision follows a review of their performance across the first and second semesters.
According to the statement, signed by the acting Head of Social Studies Education, Dr. Mohammed Adam, the expelled students are not permitted to attend Level 200 lectures or sit for Level 200 examinations.
Of the 38 students, 32 fell below the CGPA requirement, while six exceeded the failure threshold in their courses.
UEW emphasised that the decision aligns with the Revised Undergraduate Students’ Handbook and is part of efforts to uphold academic integrity.
The expulsion has sparked debate on social media, with some calling for academic policy reviews to provide additional support for struggling students.
The university, however, maintains that high academic standards are crucial for ensuring educational excellence and has urged students to seek support when facing challenges.
