The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced new funding for research. The government plans to activate the National Research Fund with GHC50 million.
Iddrisu made this announcement during the inauguration of the University of Ghana's Governing Council. This event took place in Accra on Friday, April 25.
He stated, “The president has asked me to convince you that this year he intends to operationalise the National Research Fund.” He emphasized that GHC50 million has been allocated for its launch.
The fund aims to boost research and innovation in Ghana's tertiary institutions. Its implementation responds to calls from academia for more state support.
During the ceremony, Iddrisu urged the University of Ghana to seek partnerships with the private sector. These partnerships could help address infrastructure challenges and enhance student experiences.
He mentioned that both academic and residential infrastructure should be expanded through public-private partnerships. This would improve conditions for a growing student population.
The newly formed 18-member Governing Council is chaired by Henrietta Agyeiwaa Brew. They will guide the university’s strategic direction in the coming years.
