The Students Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Ghana has vowed to oppose the 20% increase in Residential Facility User Fees (RFUF) for traditional halls of residence.
The university’s Public Affairs Directorate attributed the hike to rising electricity tariffs and the need for improved facility maintenance.
The SRC President, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, confirmed that the government is no longer covering electricity costs for students in traditional halls, pushing the financial burden onto learners.
Under the revised fees, incoming Level 100 students will now pay GHC 3,000, up from GHC 2,500, while continuing students will face a jump from GHC 1,000 to GHC 1,500 per semester.
In response, the SRC has initiated engagements with stakeholders and convened an emergency Executive Committee meeting with student leaders to strategize.
“The SRC is determined to explore all legal avenues to protect the interest of students and push for a reduction in the fees,” Yeboah stated.
Students have expressed concern over the increased financial strain, urging the university to reconsider the fee adjustment.
