The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Professor Lydia Aziato, has made an urgent appeal. She is asking private sector partners and philanthropic investors to help with UHAS's accommodation crisis.
Every year, thousands of qualified students apply to UHAS. However, only about 2,000 can be housed due to a lack of hostel facilities.
“We cannot admit many brilliant students because there is no housing,” she said. “It breaks our hearts to turn away future doctors and nurses when Ghana needs them.”
Prof. Aziato spoke during a ceremony at the university campus. Stanbic Bank Ghana donated over GH¢300,000 in teaching and learning equipment to support UHAS.
This donation is part of a larger initiative by Stanbic Bank Ghana. The bank donated over GH¢500,000 in total to three institutions: UHAS, Mawuli Senior High School, and the Ghana Police Training School.
Mr. Harry Opoku Agyemang represented the bank at the event. He explained that their corporate philosophy focuses on human capital development.
“Ghana is our home; we drive her growth,” he said. “True national development comes from investing in people.”
He emphasized that strong institutions depend on capable individuals working within them. This donation aims to support sustainable growth in Ghana.
The donation included 10 laptops, two 85-inch high-definition televisions, video cameras, and 20 tablets. These resources will enhance teaching and learning at UHAS.
Prof. Aziato expressed deep gratitude for the donation. She called it timely and impactful for health education in Ghana.
“This is not just a donation; it’s an investment in our future,” she stated.
Mr. Agyemang also mentioned Stanbic’s Financial Fitness Academy initiative. This program promotes financial literacy among workers and institutions.
“We teach financial management skills without selling bank products,” he explained. “Managing money effectively sustains families and organizations.”
While Mr. Agyemang did not share details about upcoming projects, he assured more community-centered donations are planned soon.
“You’ll definitely hear more from Stanbic,” he promised. “Where there are people committed to growth, Stanbic will be there.”
