UKGCC Grand Challenge Programme highlights innovation in Ghana’s agricultural and energy sectors

The UK Ghana Chamber of Commerce Grand Challenge Programme recently concluded its event at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

This initiative aims to drive innovation in Ghana’s agricultural and energy sectors. It identifies, supports, and scales innovative solutions. The programme has become essential for researchers, entrepreneurs, and innovators.

This year’s edition attracted diverse participants from across the country. Each presented unique ideas to tackle challenges in agriculture and energy.

The Grand Challenge follows a structured innovation methodology. It starts with challenge statements followed by competitions and capacity-building activities. Participants received targeted support to refine their solutions for implementation.

Worlase Afatsiawo is the Head of External Relations at the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce. She stated, “We want to unearth innovative ideas within Agriculture and Energy.” The programme collaborates with various ministries to bring together entrepreneurs.

The primary goals include fostering collaboration between entrepreneurs and government agencies. It also encourages innovation that addresses national challenges in both sectors.

By offering funding opportunities and capacity-building programs, the Grand Challenge helps participants develop their solutions into viable projects.

“This initiative nurtures Ghana’s innovators' creative potential,” Afatsiawo added. “It fosters collaborations needed to bring these ideas to fruition.”

The Grand Challenge lays groundwork for sustainable solutions in agriculture and energy.

Notable ideas this year included sustainable practices to increase yields while reducing environmental impact. There were also renewable energy technologies aimed at improving access in rural communities.

The event at KNUST provided valuable networking opportunities as well. Participants connected with industry experts, investors, and policymakers for insights on developing their projects further.
