The University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) is set to answer contempt of court charges after swearing in Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor as Vice-Chancellor despite a court injunction.
Former student Rashid Ibrahim filed the motion, citing violations of the university's promotion guidelines and laws governing appointments.
The plaintiff alleges Mawutor’s promotion to Associate Professor was irregular and seeks to nullify his vice-chancellor appointment. He also challenges the legality of creating two pro-vice-chancellor positions and their appointments.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Abdul-Aziz Gomda, has called for consequences, accusing the university of disregarding the rule of law.
The high court will hear the interlocutory injunction on February 18, 2025, amid heightened scrutiny of public university governance under GTEC leadership.
