US Army and Ghana Armed Forces collaborate on medical preparedness

Ghana is hosting the U.S. Army Southern Europe Task Force-Africa's Medical Readiness Exercise (MEDREX 2025).

The exercise began on May 5 and will end on May 23. It includes 27 U.S. medical professionals specializing in various fields. These specialties include critical care, trauma surgery, dentistry, obstetrics, gynecology, and veterinary services.

U.S. personnel are working at three sites: the 37 Military Hospital, the Ghana Armed Forces Veterinary Clinic, and the Ghana National Dog Academy in Accra. They are joined by Ghana Armed Forces medical staff and members from the North Dakota National Guard.

This year marks Ghana's fourth time hosting Exercise African Lion 2025. This is the largest annual military exercise of the U.S. Africa Command and includes MEDREX 2025.

The focus of this exercise is joint planning and medical readiness. It aims to integrate military intelligence while preparing U.S. personnel to provide care alongside their Ghanaian counterparts.

The goal is to enhance quick and efficient medical care during combat operations.

At a media briefing at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, U.S. team members shared their experiences. The event was moderated by Mr. Matthew Asada from the U.S. Embassy.

Lieutenant Colonel Mary Stuever, a trauma surgeon, spoke about her experiences in different environments with limited resources. She expressed her commitment to learn more from her Ghanaian colleagues.

Sergeant First Class Albert Kwadwo Nimako also shared his thoughts at the briefing. He wants to give back to Ghana and learn how to operate effectively in resource-limited settings.

Since its start on May 5, MEDREX 2025 has facilitated humanitarian assistance programs in Africa. This year's drill included combined security cooperation activities in Tamale and Kumbungu from May 8–16.
