The Superior Court of New Jersey has ruled in favor of Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, awarding him $18 million in damages in a defamation lawsuit against former MP Kennedy Agyapong and social media commentator Frederick Asamoah.
The case stemmed from alleged defamatory remarks made during a 2021 online interview, where Anas was accused of criminal activities, including involvement in the murder of his colleague, Ahmed Suale.
The court found the statements baseless and damaging to Anas' reputation.
Meanwhile, Kennedy Agyapong’s legal team has filed for a reduction in the awarded damages.
This ruling contrasts with a recent Accra High Court decision that dismissed Anas' defamation suit against Agyapong, instead branding Anas' journalism as "investigative terrorism."
