The University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) has called for the resignation of Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu. This demand follows a controversial payroll audit report.
The Auditor-General's office claimed that the University overstated employee compensation by GH¢59.2 million from 2022 to 2024. However, UTAG-UG disputes these findings, calling the report misleading and inaccurate.
The association believes the audit harms the university's reputation. They also argue it did not allow staff to respond or clarify any discrepancies.
On May 20, UTAG-UG General Secretary Jerry Joe Harrison addressed the press. He accused the Auditor-General of ethical misconduct and said this makes him unfit for office.
Harrison stated that the audit service seems more focused on appearances than ethics. He added that the University was not allowed to review or comment on the findings before they were publicized.
“The University maintains that it was not given a chance to clarify discrepancies,” he said. “This is unfair and unethical.”
Harrison described this conduct as a failure of professional standards. He demanded action against the Auditor-General.
“If he continues in office while ignoring ethical standards, we will petition for his removal,” Harrison declared.
