The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has called for an immediate nationwide ban on all mining activities in forest reserves, farms, and rivers due to the environmental damage caused by illegal mining (galamsey).

UTAG highlighted the failure of state-led efforts to combat illegal mining, citing widespread corruption and environmental destruction, including a 45% drop in cocoa production and the destruction of 2.5 million hectares of forest.

UTAG warned that if action isn't taken soon, Ghana may need to import water within six years.

They vowed to join other unions in nationwide action if the ban isn't enforced by September 2024.
