The Accra Ubuntu Lions Club is a non-profit service organization. On Saturday, they officially handed over their High Impact Hunger project. This was done to the management of Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital.
The project included several key improvements. It adopted and refurbished the hospital’s Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC). It also renovated the skills training shed for mothers. Additionally, it upgraded the corn milling room to generate funds for the NRC. The goal is to promote health and well-being for children facing malnutrition.
This project was a partnership with Princess Marie Children’s Hospital. It was supported by DHL’s Got Heart Initiative, Crystal Palm Hotels, and others.
Dr. Helena Asamoah-Hassan addressed the gathering as Governor of District 418 of Lions International. She congratulated the club on completing the project despite limited resources. She praised PML for granting access to their facility. Dr. Asamoah-Hassan noted that this project addresses three Sustainable Development Goals: no poverty, zero hunger, and good health and well-being.
She also mentioned six global goals of the club: humanitarian aid, youth support, environmental care, vision assistance, cancer awareness, and hunger relief. She encouraged all Lions clubs to pursue impactful projects for humanity. Lastly, she advised management to maintain the project's sustainability.
Lion Edwina Judith Safee-Boafo, MJF, is the President of the Lions Club. She highlighted that malnutrition is a major public health issue in Ghana. It contributes to under-five mortality and long-term developmental challenges.
She pointed out that children aged 6-12 months are especially vulnerable to malnutrition's effects. These can lead to developmental delays and poor cognitive abilities. “Our project aimed to address these issues,” she explained.
It provides nutritional support and empowers parents with skills for income generation. This helps families care for their children so they can reach their full potential in life.
With pride, Lion Safee-Boafo said completing this project shows dedication from all involved stakeholders. “Our collective efforts demonstrate that unity can create meaningful change,” she noted.
Dr. Seth T. Hassan is Chairman of the High Impact Committee. He recounted challenges faced before implementing the project but expressed gratitude for overcoming them with wisdom and strength.
He commended PML's management and staff along with sponsors and mothers for their commitment. “Your efforts have achieved this success,” he said appreciatively.
