Ukraine has launched a large drone operation against Russian airbases. They claim to have hit over 40 strategic bomber aircraft. This coordinated attack occurred deep within Russian territory.
According to Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), the mission aimed to weaken Russia's long-range strike capabilities. The SBU stated, “Enemy strategic bombers are burning en masse in Russia.” They described the attack as a significant blow against aircraft used for missile strikes on Ukraine.
Russian media confirmed drone strikes in Murmansk and Irkutsk regions. These areas host major airbases but reported that Russian air defense systems intercepted many threats. The extent of damage remains unverified, and Moscow has not officially confirmed any losses.
This drone strike comes during one of Ukraine's most intense aerial bombardments since the invasion began. Overnight, Ukraine faced 472 drones and seven ballistic and cruise missiles from Russia. Ukrainian air defenses claimed to have shot down 385 of these threats.
The escalating attacks indicate a sharp increase in the air war between both nations. Both sides are increasingly using long-range drones to target enemy defenses and infrastructure. While Ukraine frames its attack as preemptive, it remains unclear if they have permanently disabled parts of Russia's bomber fleet or caused only temporary disruption.
