Stan Dogbe, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, reassured Ghanaians. He stated that President John Dramani Mahama supports the right to peaceful protest.
Dogbe spoke after a New Patriotic Party (NPP) demonstration. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin led the group on May 5. They delivered a petition protesting the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
The demonstrators had also submitted petitions to Parliament and the judicial service.
Mr. Dogbe emphasized that this administration respects peaceful assemblies. He assured that this respect will continue.
“President Mahama has always upheld the people’s right to protest,” he said. He encouraged citizens to exercise their freedoms responsibly.
He added that respectful protests are vital for Ghana’s democracy. The government sees them as civic engagement, not a threat.
“As long as protests are non-violent and lawful, they are welcomed,” Mr. Dogbe noted.
In closing, he called for mutual respect between protesters and state institutions.
“We ask all demonstrators to maintain order and respect public property,” he affirmed. In return, the government will ensure their safety and protect their rights.
