The Ashanti Region is crucial to Ghana’s economy. It serves as a major center for business activity.
Dr. Thomas Kofi Dompem is the CEO of Obibini Blackman Company Limited. He shared insights during an interview on Akoma 87.9FM in Kumasi with Sir John.
He noted that the region hosts many business owners, traders, and factory operators. This makes it a key area in the country’s economic landscape.
Dr. Dompem stated, “The Ashanti Region stands out as a significant hub in Ghana.” He emphasized that few regions match its level of economic activity.
Any financial instability in Ghana affects Ashanti most severely.
Dr. Dompem also discussed Ghana's historical economic challenges. He recalled issues during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
Concerns included high taxes, excessive port duties, and a weakening cedi. At that time, the cedi's exchange rate was 4 to 1 dollar.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) later criticized these problems after taking power. However, Dr. Dompem argued that conditions worsened under NPP leadership.
“When the NPP came to power, the situation worsened,” he said.
