Unfair to expect Mahama to end galamsey in 96 days – Sam George

Minister Sam Nartey George has called it “unfair” to expect President John Mahama to solve the illegal mining issue, known as galamsey, in just 96 days.

In an interview on Channel One TV on April 14, he stated that while efforts are ongoing, it is unrealistic to expect a quick fix for a problem that has lasted nearly a decade.

He noted that expecting President Mahama to resolve such a complex issue in weeks is unreasonable. The previous administration under Nana Akufo-Addo had eight years but did not succeed.

Mr. George addressed past criticisms regarding his comments on galamsey during Akufo-Addo’s presidency. He previously stated that the former president could have dealt with galamsey quickly because he was Commander-in-Chief.

He clarified that his comments were made three months before the end of Akufo-Addo's term. At that time, he believed there was ample opportunity and resources available to tackle the issue effectively.

Mr. George highlighted progress made under President Mahama in just two months. He mentioned that seven forest reserves have been recovered from illegal miners.

He acknowledged the need for more action but reiterated that it is unfair to expect one person to clean up eight years of mess in 90 days.

The Minister stressed that illegal mining is a serious crime and must be addressed by all political parties.

He views galamsey as a crime against humanity and advocates for a united approach to eliminate it, regardless of political affiliation or government leadership.
