University Senior Staff declares indefinite strike over breach of agreement

Academic and administrative activities at Ghana's public universities are disrupted. This follows an indefinite strike by three unions: the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG), and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG).

The strike began today. Union leaders announced it at a press conference in Accra. They cited the government's failure to honor a binding agreement signed six months ago.

Mr. George Ansong, National Chairman of SSA-UoG, stated, “This painful but necessary step follows numerous attempts at dialogue.” He added that their efforts have faced persistent inaction from the government.

The unions argue that the agreement aimed to improve working conditions. However, it has been ignored despite repeated follow-ups and extensions granted in good faith.

Mr. Ansong emphasized that the strike is not hostile. It is a last-resort measure against a “systemic culture of broken promises.” He said, “We have exhausted all available avenues for resolution.”

He described the strike as a principled stand to defend their rights. The union leaders recognize that this action may disrupt the academic calendar and university operations.

However, they believe the responsibility lies with the government for failing to meet its commitments. They declared, “We will not return to work until the government fulfills its end of the agreement.”

The unions are urging civil society, media, and the public to support them. They want everyone to pressure the government to act in good faith.
