University staff strike premature despite ongoing talks – GTEC

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) is disappointed by a nationwide strike. This strike was declared by senior staff unions of public universities. GTEC calls the action premature and taken in bad faith.

The indefinite strike began on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. It was announced by three unions: SSA-UoG, TUAAG, and FUSSAG. The unions are protesting the government's delay in implementing an agreement made six months ago.

On Thursday, May 22, GTEC issued a statement about the situation. They noted that steps had been taken to address the unions' concerns before the strike. The National Labour Commission (NLC) invited all stakeholders to a hearing on May 21.

GTEC also mentioned that SSA-UoG met with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) on May 19. During this meeting, they received assurances that their demands would be addressed. Additionally, GTEC planned a meeting with senior staff associations for May 23.

Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai is the Director-General of GTEC. He stated that the Minister of Education met with the unions in April. The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving these issues.

GTEC expressed surprise at the strike given ongoing dialogue and progress. They described the strike as “illegal.” GTEC urged the unions to return to negotiations for a lasting solution.
