Upper East Region records over 600 mental health cases in Q1 of 2025

Health facilities in the Upper East Region reported 611 mental health cases in early 2025. This information comes from Edem Quarshie Ameglah, the Regional Mental Health Coordinator.

The cases include bipolar disorders, 44 cases of depression, and 58 alcohol-related disorders. There are also various other mental health conditions included in the report.

Mr. Ameglah spoke on A1 Radio, as monitored by ClassNewsroom. He warned that these figures likely represent only a small part of the actual situation.

“These are just the reported cases,” he said. “The real number may be much higher.” Many people do not seek help at formal health facilities due to stigma or inability.

He noted that many prefer faith-based healing over medical care. “People often ignore early signs of mental fatigue or distress,” he explained. Instead of going to hospitals, they turn to faith healers, delaying proper diagnosis and treatment.

Mr. Ameglah emphasized the need for better public education on mental health issues. He urged communities to view mental illness as a medical condition, not a spiritual failing.

“Until we change this narrative,” he said, “more people will continue to suffer in silence.” He also called on traditional leaders, churches, and local organizations to help demystify mental health and encourage early medical intervention.
