Use AI responsibly to tackle journalism challenges – GJA Chairperson advises

Mrs. Regina Benneh-Siaw is the acting Chairperson of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) for Ahafo, Bono, and Bono East Regions. She urged journalists to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly. This call came during the launch of the 2024 Regional GJA Awards in Sunyani.

Mrs. Benneh-Siaw discussed AI's opportunities and risks. She emphasized issues like misinformation, media credibility, and access to reliable information. The theme for this year’s awards is "Overcoming Barriers to Accessing Information in the Age of AI." It highlights the conflict between digital innovation and journalistic integrity.

She noted that barriers exist due to government transparency issues and misinformation. These obstacles can prevent journalists from gathering accurate information for their audiences.

Mrs. Benneh-Siaw encouraged journalists to learn about AI. She suggested participating in workshops to stay competitive and uphold ethical standards in journalism. “Let’s read about AI, share ideas, and practice our skills,” she said.

She also called for greater transparency from government institutions. Journalists should improve their critical thinking and digital literacy skills as well. “We must work together to overcome barriers that hinder effective journalism,” she stated.

The awards committee announced several categories for recognition this year. These include Best Health/Medical Report, Political Report, Sports Report, Business/Financial Report, Investigative Report, Judiciary/Court/Crime Report, and Socio-Economic Reports.

Other categories include Best Gender Report, Education Report, Morning/Afternoon Show Programme, Features/Documentary Report, and Entertainment Report. Additional awards will recognize Agricultural Reports, Photojournalism, Culture and Tradition Reporting, Tourism/Hospitality Reporting, Most Promising Young Journalist Award, and Overall Best Journalist Award.

There will also be awards for Science Reporting, Technology Reporting, Telecommunications Reporting, Best Anchor/Personality of the Year (Twi and English), and Disability Reporting.

The event was attended by Bono Regional Minister Joseph Addai Akwaboa along with journalists from three regions and other media stakeholders.
