Use Threat Of Dismissal As A Tool To Fight Galamsey –Methodist Church

Rt. Rev. Baffour Asamoah-Agyei, the Methodist Bishop of Obuasi Diocese, spoke about illegal mining. He believes President John Dramani Mahama can stop this issue. He urged the President to act quickly before it worsens.

Bishop Asamoah-Agyei addressed the 28th Annual Synod at Manso Atwere in Ashanti region. He stated that only the President can end galamsey activities.

He suggested that if the President fires Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) overseeing galamsey, it would send a strong message. This action would encourage these leaders to take action against illegal mining.

The Bishop expressed confidence that one statement from the President could eliminate the galamsey problem entirely. He noted that MMDCEs struggle with their appointments and need motivation to combat illegal mining.

He emphasized that we do not need a prophet to see our environmental decline. Our rivers, cocoa, and forests are being destroyed by galamsey activities.

Bishop Asamoah-Agyei also called on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, for support. He suggested that if chiefs are destooled for allowing galamsey on their land, it would deter such activities.

He referenced a successful case in Sabronum as an example of effective enforcement. The Bishop thanked Nana Bi-Kusi Appiah II for building a new church for the local Methodist community.

This was reported by Frederick Danso Abeam from Manso Atwere.
