Use all resources available to combat illegal mining - Ahiagbah tells gov't

Richard Ahiagbah is the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He urged President Mahama's government to combat illegal mining, known as galamsey.

At a press conference on March 26, he emphasized the urgent need for action. Galamsey is causing severe environmental damage. It threatens Ghana’s forest reserves and ecosystem.

Mr. Ahiagbah reminded everyone of a promise made by President Mahama. During his campaign, he vowed to end illegal mining.

He pointed out that President Mahama promised to repeal L1 2462. This law aimed to stop mining activities harming Ghana's forests.

“The President committed to ending galamsey,” Mr. Ahiagbah said. “We must remind him of that promise.”

He criticized the current administration for not fulfilling this commitment. Instead of taking strong action, the government proposed amendments to existing laws. These changes would allow some illegal mining to continue.

"This amendment weakens efforts against illegal mining," he explained. It removes the president's power over forest reserve applications.

Mr. Ahiagbah warned that this approach could lead to significant forest loss in Ghana. “At this rate, we may lose most or all of our forest reserves,” he cautioned.
