V/R: Kpetoe residents relieved as boreholes ease water crisis

Residents of Kpetoe can finally relax. They have relied on the Tordze River for water. Despite warnings, they used untreated river water for months.

Now, mechanised boreholes have been built in Kpetoe Township. Before this, residents walked long distances to fetch water from the river. The government’s ‘5 Districts Water Supply Project’ was extended to their district but did not help much.

A treatment plant built years ago struggled with demand. The town's growing population overwhelmed the ageing facility. This led to irregular access to clean water and frustration among residents.

Dennis Soku, a local resident, shared their struggles. “At times, we wouldn’t get water for days,” he said. “We complained, but nothing changed.” He noted that warnings against drinking from the river made things harder.

Philanthropist Jeffery Kavianu spoke at the commissioning of two new boreholes. He praised the boreholes as a positive step but highlighted ongoing issues. “The real issue lies with the old treatment plant,” he stated.

Kavianu urged the government to renovate it quickly for consistent access to safe water. While some community members welcomed the boreholes, they wanted more solutions. “Boreholes are not enough,” one resident said.

They called for a reliable treated water supply for everyone in the long term.
