The CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Edudzi Tamakloe, has promised a thorough review of community concerns. This relates to a proposed fuel station in Hofedo, Ho, Volta Region.
He made this assurance during a community meeting on June 5, 2025. The meeting aimed to address safety and suitability issues regarding the location. Mr. Tamakloe was joined by senior NPA officials and engaged with residents and local leaders.
They also included representatives from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and other agencies. "When we learned about this issue through the media, we had to come," he said. "We wanted to hear directly from those affected."
The NPA noted that community concerns include environmental risks and safety hazards. These issues require scientifically grounded solutions like enhanced monitoring systems and rigorous assessments. “We have heard both the community and developers,” Mr. Tamakloe stated.
He added that they now have a plan prioritizing safety and transparency. The proposed fuel station is a project by Star Oil Company.
Selorm Tetteh Quapepu, COO of Star Oil Company, spoke at the meeting. He committed to full regulatory compliance and collaboration with relevant agencies. “We have operated for 26 years while upholding safety standards,” he assured.
Abel Youngs, spokesperson for Hofedo, praised NPA leadership for their engagement. “We support development but it must not endanger our lives,” he emphasized.
Residents expressed cautious optimism after hearing from top NPA officials. They felt hopeful due to the involvement of regulatory bodies in addressing their concerns.
Mr. Tamakloe thanked the media for highlighting this issue. He encouraged citizens across Ghana to voice concerns about public safety matters. “This matter is not being brushed aside,” he assured Hofedo residents.
The NPA confirmed that findings from an investigative team will guide their next steps.
