Veteran journalist and former NMC chair Nana Gyan-Apenteng dies at 74

Veteran Ghanaian journalist Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng has died in London.

He passed away on Monday at the age of 74.

Nana Gyan-Apenteng was the Chairman of the National Media Commission from November 2015 to November 2018. He succeeded Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere in this role.

He was highly respected in media and literary circles. With over four decades of experience, he worked as a journalist, editor, writer, teacher, and trainer.

Nana Gyan-Apenteng also served as President of the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW). He was a consultant in communication, media, and culture.

Throughout his career, he held several important positions. He was an editor and columnist for The Mirror newspaper. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he worked as deputy editor for West Africa magazine in London.

After returning to Ghana in the 1990s, he joined the Third World Network. There, he led the communication unit and edited their monthly magazine, Africa Agenda.

He trained journalists throughout his career. He also served as a communications consultant for many institutions. These included MTN Ghana and various United Nations agencies.

Additionally, he worked with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and STAR Ghana.

Nana Gyan-Apenteng held a traditional title as Apagyahene of Tafo Eti in the Eastern Region.

His death is a significant loss to Ghana’s media and literary communities.
